After The Flood: Clean Up And Stay Safe - FEMA - April 2
Individuals affected by the flooding that began on March 16, 2009, are urged to begin cleaning up their homes and personal property as soon as possible. Officials from Minnesota’s Homeland Security Emergency Management (HSEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) emphasize that it is not necessary to wait for an inspection before beginning this process.

FDA Alerts Consumers to Recall of Certain Pistachios - FDA - March 30
The FDA and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are investigating Salmonella contamination in pistachio products sold by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc, Calif. The company has stopped all distribution of processed pistachios and will issue a voluntary recall involving approximately 1 million pounds of its products. Because the pistachios were used as ingredients in a variety of foods, it is likely this recall will impact many products. In addition, the investigation at the company is ongoing and may lead to additional pistachio product recalls.

FDA Alerts the Public to Uncle Chen and Lian How Brand Dry Spice Product Recall - FDA - April 2
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting the public to a voluntary recall by Union International Food Company (Union City, Calif.) of the company's dry spice products. The recall is based on an investigation of an ongoing foodborne illness outbreak of Salmonella Rissen. This investigation is being conducted in collaboration with state health officials in California, Oregon, Nevada, Washington and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The company's products are distributed in these states and Arizona.

Medical Product Safety Alert

FDA Class 1 Recall: Tri-State Hospital Supply Corporation, Centurion Brand Trays and Kits - FDA - April 3
Tri-State Hospital Supply Corporation and FDA notified healthcare professionals of a class 1 recall of multiple types of Centurion brand disposable trays and kits used for insertion of tubes, catheters and ports, due to package sealing that may effect the sterility of the devices. These products were distributed from November 24, 2008 through January 7, 2009. Distributors and customers were instructed to remove the products from their inventory, inform the company of the number of products in stock and hold the products until the company arranges for their return.

New Vaccine to Prevent Japanese Encephalitis - FDA - March 30
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved IXIARO, a vaccine to prevent Japanese encephalitis (JE) which is caused by a mosquito-transmitted virus found mainly in Asia. IXIARO will be the only vaccine for JE available in the United States.

Travelers' Health

Yellow Fever in Brazil - CDC - April 2
Since the beginning of 2009, there has been an expansion in areas of yellow fever virus transmission in Brazil. Two states, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paolo, have recently designated expanded areas of risk following confirmation of new human cases of yellow fever within their boundaries. This demonstrates the particular intensity of yellow fever virus activity in the southern part of the country.

Update: Dengue, Tropical and Subtropical Regions - CDC - April 2
Dengue fever is the most common cause of fever in travelers returning from the Caribbean, Central America, and South Central Asia. This disease is caused by four similar viruses (DENV-1, -2, -3, and -4) spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes.
