BROPHY COLLEGE PREP A REPEAT CHAMPION IN ARIZONA SCIENCE BOWL

PHOENIX, Ariz.—Brophy College Preparatory successfully defended its Arizona Regional Science Bowl winning title Feb. 21 by defeating Tempe Preparatory Academy 68 to 52.

The Brophy team, which includes Coaches Patrick Kolb and Cheryl Lenox and students Jared Martin, Ruka Murugan, Vinay Jayaram, Curran Bice, Kiefer Forseth and Aaron Corral (team manager), earned a $1,000 check for their school and an all-expense paid trip to the National Competition in Washington, D.C., April 30 to May 5. Tempe took second place, which included a $750 check, and the team from BASIS-Tucson won third place and a $500 check.  Phoenix Country Day School came in fourth and earned at $250 check.

“There is only one word to describe this year’s DSW Science Bowl—‘Wow!,’”  said Penny Casey, Western’s acting Desert Southwest Regional manager and event volunteer.  “It had everyone on the edge of their seats as we heard the final questions.  It was an honor to present both teams with first- and second-place awards—they were both well deserved. I anxiously await the opportunity to point out to my grandchildren someday that the person in a key leadership role within our country was once an Arizona Regional Science Bowl winner whom I shook hands with in 2009.”

Brophy and Tempe went head to head in the finals, after beating 26 other teams from 11 other schools. While Tempe successfully answered a toss up question about  the name for the cell of atmospheric circulation that lies between the Polar and Hadley cells that is driven by their movements*, the team couldn’t capture Brophy’s early lead and  Brophy secured its championship for the second year in a row.

The 15th Annual Arizona Regional Science Bowl is a math and science competition for Arizona high school students to encourage involvement in math and science, improve awareness of career options in science and technology and provide an avenue of enrichment and reward for academic science achievement.
