RIDGEVIEW CLASSICAL SCHOOL WINS 2009 REGIONAL SCIENCE BOWL  

LOVELAND, Colo. —Ridgeview Classical School of Fort Collins won the Rocky Mountain Regional Science Bowl on Saturday at Colorado State University.  The winning team, including Benjamin Michaud, Ryan Hitchman, Westin Webb, Sarah Hamilton, David Chiavetta, and Coach Paula Petterson, advances to Washington, D.C., April 30 to May 5 to compete against 66 other regional winners in the national finals of the Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl at the Nation’s Capital. Poudre High School of Fort Collins finished second and Fruita–Monument High School of Fruita finished third.

Twenty four teams from 17 high schools from Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming competed on Saturday.  Many of these teams spent months preparing for this regional event, which features head-to-head competition in a fast-paced question and answer format similar to Jeopardy. The students competed to be the first to answer questions on all science disciplines including astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, mathematics and physics, as well as math.  Teams range from those who practice rigorously for this very day to those who are fine-tuning their team’s skills for the next year. 

This is the 17th year for the Rocky Mountain Regional Science Bowl, sponsored by Western Area Power Administration (Western), Colorado State University, other government agencies and business partners in Colorado.
Science Bowl is a proven tool in encouraging high school students to excel in math and science and to pursue careers in those fields.  .

• Lincoln Jr. High School, Fort Collins
• Loveland High School, Loveland
• Mitchell High School, Scottsbluff, Neb.
• Peak to Peak Charter School, Lafayette
• Pine Bluffs High School, Pine Bluffs, Wyo.
• Poudre High School, Fort Collins
• Ridgeview Classical Schools, Fort Collins
• Rocky Mountain High School, Fort Collins
• Sterling High School, Sterling

This year more than 12,000 high school students from 1,800 schools in 42 states will compete in the national competition.  Since 1991, more than 130,000 students and teachers have participated.
