Eight men were charged after a spate of violent crimes committed this past summer in Atlanta. The Atlanta Police and the Fulton County District Attorney, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the U.S. Marshals South East Regional Fugitive Task Force made the announcement today.

The Violent Crime Impact Team (VCIT) initiated the joint effort. ATF Special Agent in Charge Vanessa McLemore, said, “The multi-agency cooperation in this investigation can be described as nothing short of seamless. By disrupting this violent crime spree of robbery and murders, the ATF/APD VCIT and the Fulton County DA's Office lend true testament to putting words into action. These arrests are one more step towards making our neighborhoods safe.”These arrests represent the end of a violent crime spree. These crimes were committed by some of the worst of the worst criminals in the City of Atlanta. They are charged in relation to 3 murders and one aggravated assault and suspects in 3 additional murders. In addition, sixteen weapons were seized.ATF, the Atlanta Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service are acting decisively to investigate, reduce and prevent violent crime. ATF’s VCIT is a focused approach on a local level. VCIT ensures all enforcement efforts from the beat cop to the homicide detective are coordinated and focused on the most violent offenders in a given area. The goal of the VCIT program is the reduction of homicides and other firearms-related violence through the identification, investigation, and arrest of those responsible for violent crime. Identifying the most active and violent offenders and using every available tool to investigate them provids the foundation of the overall success of several VCIT operations. The message that “gun crime means hard time” is understood and taken seriously by the criminal element. Publicizing success deters would be offenders and reduces fear in the community. We believe that highlighting ATF’s work with local officers on the street, will grab the attention of local gang members and repeat offenders.
