If not properly maintained and managed, underground storage
tanks (USTs) can cause harm to human health and the environment
by leaking or allowing spills or overflows of the products
contained to enter the soils or groundwater. EPA Region
3 has partnered with our States and the District of Columbia
toward the goal of preventing, detecting, and remediating
contamination caused by releases from USTs containing petroleum
or hazardous substances.
The states are the lead implementors of the
UST and LUST programs in the Region. EPA Region 3's role is
to oversee program performance, provide program guidance,
administer cooperative agreements (financial support) with
states, provide technical support, conduct federal inspection
and enforcement activities, and other program functions.
