Stratospheric Ozone Protection

CFCs, Refrigerants, Air Conditioning, Ozone Layer

In an effort to meet the United States' international commitments, Congress included stratospheric ozone protection as part of the Clean Air Act. The Act implemented a multifaceted approach to solving the very important global problem of depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer. The most common ozone depleting substances are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). The United States is addressing this problem by limiting the production and importation of ozone depleting chemicals, restricting the availability and use of CFCs and HCFCs, requiring labeling for products containing or manufactured with CFCs or HCFCs, and prohibiting nonessential products containing or manufactured with CFCs or HCFCs.

In Region 3, our stratospheric protection program is supporting this national and international effort by providing information, assisting the public and enforcing the law against violators of these regulations. Questions about the regulations or tips of possible violations can be directed to the Region 3 Customer Service Hotline at (800) 438-2474.
