Senate Confirms Carol Kinsley's Re-appointment to Board of Corporation for National and Community Service

Washington, D.C. — Carol Kinsley, a long-time proponent of service-learning, has been re-appointed to the board of directors of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the agency that administers Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America. Kinsley has served on the board since it was established in October 1994. Her reappointment for a three-year term was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 9.

Kinsley is a service-learning and education consultant who was executive director of the Community Service Learning Center in Springfield, Mass., which she founded in 1990 when education budget cuts were threatening the community service-learning programs. She served as the center's executive director for eight years, providing technical assistance and professional development services to teachers, schools, higher education, and community-based organizations. The Community Service Learning Center is known for its annual New England conference on service-learning, and has provided countless workshops, training events, and institutes teaching the techniques of integrating service-learning into educational programs.

"Carol Kinsley has provided invaluable leadership to the Corporation for National and Community Service since its inception," commented James Manning, acting CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. "Our staff and programs are privileged to be able to count on her continued guidance as we seek to encourage all Americans to answer the Call to Service issued by President Bush."

In accepting the re-appointment, Kinsley, who holds a doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts, said, "I am honored by this re-appointment. It provides a wonderful opportunity to support the contributions of young people and senor citizens as they serve our country through the Corporation's programs. I thank very much those who have made this opportunity possible."

The Corporation for National and Community Service provides opportunities for community service through three programs: Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America. Working with national and community nonprofits, faith-based groups, schools, and local agencies, the Corporation engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in meeting critical needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security, and other areas. The Corporation and its programs are part of USA Freedom Corps, a White House initiative to foster a culture of citizenship, service, and responsibility, and help all Americans answer the President's Call to Service.
