MEDIA ADVISORY: Former President Bush, Alma Powell, to Keynote at National Conference on Volunteering and Service

 

3,000 volunteer and service leaders to converge on Philadelphia July 16-18

Philadelphia, PA – Former President George H.W. Bush and America’s Promise co-founder Alma Powell are among the prestigious speakers set to address volunteer sector leaders from across the nation and the globe this July 16-18 at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service taking place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

The annual conference is the nation’s largest gathering on volunteering and service. An estimated 3,000 attendees will come together for three days of education, training and networking.  Joined by leading federal and state officials and executives from the business community, attendees will learn how to expand the ranks and effectiveness of America’s 61 million volunteers in tackling tough social problems.

Co-convened by the Points of Light Foundation and Corporation for National and Community Service, the conference will feature 130-plus workshops, high level speakers, six volunteer service projects, an exhibit hall and more.  The conference theme, the “Power of We,” recognizes Philadelphia’s Constitutional history and emphasizes the power of collective action to solve our problems.  Speakers include:

Monday, July 16

9:30 -11:30 a.m.     Opening Plenary, Convention Center Ballroom AB

  • Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell and Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street
        
  • Alma Powell, Chair, America’s Promise Alliance, will speak to progress made in addressing the needs of our nation’s youth since the 1997 Presidents’ Summit for America’s Future and the new Alliance 15 in 5 campaign aimed at improving the lives of 15 million disadvantaged children over the next five years.
        
  • David Eisner, CEO, Corporation for National and Community Service, will address how volunteering is necessary for America to tackle its problems; describe the growing momentum of the volunteer and national service sector, and lay out the challenges to building a national culture of service.
        
  • Terry Williams, Interim CEO, Points of Light Foundation, will speak on the importance of collaboration among public, business and nonprofit agencies at all levels, with an emphasis on the role played by the organization’s affiliated Volunteer Centers.

2-4:00 p.m.     Forum on “Creating a Vision in Higher Education: A Conversation with College Presidents, Nonprofit and Corporate Leaders” in Room 112B featuring:

  • Sam Palmisano, IBM Chairman and CEO, is the 2007 recipient of the George Bush Corporate Leadership Award and will address the role that corporations can play in promoting employee volunteerism and corporate social responsibility.
        
  • Jeff Swartz, President & CEO, Timberland, will discuss his company’s vision of engaged corporate citizenship and their programs to involve employees in days of service.
        
  • Former President George Bush is honorary chairman of the Points of Light Foundation.
