New AmeriCorps*NCCC Blog Presents Firsthand View of Life in Service

The Journey Begins for the Lost Tribe of Green Five

Washington, D.C. — For the first time, the Corporation for National and Community Service has launched a weekly blog that chronicles the experiences of an AmeriCorps*NCCC team working in the field to serve community needs.

The colorful, read-only blog, “The Lost Tribe of Green Five,” is available to the general public at http://www.americorps.gov/ncccblog. Readers can expect to find regular updates providing insight into the challenging and important projects being done by one of the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps teams based at the Western Region campus in Sacramento, CA.

The seven-member Green Five team has begun narrating its work, starting with a project in the small rural town of Alpaugh, CA, where they picked up trash and helped residents safely dispose of old household electronics and hazardous materials, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management of the U.S. Department of the Interior. The blog is written for members of the AmeriCorps family, individuals considering joining AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps alumni, and the general public as an example of NCCC work that is necessary to health of American communities.

“The team members wanted to create a blog to share their experience and support recruitment efforts by giving readers a realistic picture of life in AmeriCorps,” said Merlene Mazyck, Director of AmeriCorps*NCCC. “We think this use of this medium is a wonderful way to bring our program to vivid life on a weekly and firsthand basis. AmeriCorps alumni are sure to find the experiences familiar, and potential members will learn how service benefits the community as well as themselves.”

“It’s incredibly inspiring as a staff member and alum of NCCC to see a team take initiative to help educate people on what’s like to serve in NCCC,” said Lauren Hazewski, community relations specialist for AmeriCorps*NCCC Western Region. “This blog is a creative way to showcase the diverse talents and experiences of our members.”

The team consists of leader Chelsea Green and members Erin Mather, Jared Kahan, Joanna Schiff, Leann Payne, Orlando Vazquez, and Vanessa Borotz. The site contains updated blogs, photos and an introduction of Green Five members. On the home page, the group describes coming together at NCCC’s Western Region campus to begin their year of service as AmeriCorps members.

"Once our team was fashioned, we started the bonding process over movies, common interests, loads of sarcasm, and finger puppets,” the team wrote in its first posting. “As a team during our first month honeymoon, we learned to make balloon animals, planted over a hundred trees, developed a road and over 1,500 feet of trail, learned CPR and first aid, sat through countless hours of Corps Training Institute (CTI), ran more miles than we can keep track of, and ate many family dinners. But alas, something was missing from our lives. What was the one thing we all came here for? SERVICE!"

To follow Green Five’s journey into its year of service, check the Web site weekly.

AmeriCorps*NCCC is one of three AmeriCorps programs, along with AmeriCorps*State and National and AmeriCorps*VISTA. All are administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, which also oversees Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. The Corporation’s mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. Together with the USA Freedom Corps, the Corporation is working to build a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility in America. For more information, visit http://www.nationalservice.gov.
