Washington, DC – In his 2002 State of the Union, President Bush called on Americans to help their communities and nation through a commitment to service. From mentoring a young person to building houses for the homeless – those answering the call are eligible for a Presidential medal to recognize their efforts.

Less than five years later, the 500,000th President’s Volunteer Service Award will be presented in New Orleans Friday, October 27. The big question: Who will become the half-millionth recipient of the distinguished prize for community service?

That answer will be revealed at the Association of Small Foundations Conference at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel. News media are welcome to attend.

Jean Case, Chair of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation will present the 500,000th President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The 25-member President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation was given a charge by President Bush to promote an ethic of service and to recognize the millions of Americans who are giving back to their communities through generous acts of service. To date, more than 16,500 organizations are part of the Council’s network and together they honor America's volunteers with the President's Volunteer Service Award. Administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, together with the USA Freedom Corps, the Council brings together leaders from the worlds of business, entertainment, sports, education, government, nonprofits, and the media to promote their efforts.
