National Service Agency Seeks Applicants For Eli Segal Fellowship

Washington, DC - The Corporation for National and Community Service invites applications from former AmeriCorps members for the first Eli Segal Fellowship. The program is named after the late Eli Segal, who served as the first CEO of the Corporation from 1993 to 1995. Segal passed away in February 2006.

“Eli Segal was a giant in national service, and his presence is very much missed in the national service community,” said David Eisner, CEO of the Corporation. “Because of his role in launching AmeriCorps, combined with the entrepreneurial spirit he showed throughout his life, this fellowship is a particularly fitting way to honor Eli’s life and work.”

The Eli Segal Fellow selected will help to advance the mission of national service and the strategic goals of the Corporation. Eligible applicants for the fellowship include all AmeriCorps alums who served full-time in the past three years, who will be available to serve at Corporation headquarters starting in November, and who have the ability to manage all aspects of a project with nation-wide impact. Exceptions to the three-year limit may be made for candidates who have been in school full time since serving in AmeriCorps, or who have been in military or other national service such as Peace Corps. “The Segal Fellow must demonstrate exceptional leadership, dedication to the ideals of national service, a social entrepreneurial spirit, and effective communication and analytical skills,” said Marlene Zakai, Director of Grants and Policy Operations, who will oversee the fellowship. Members of Segal’s family will be represented in the selection process.

The Corporation currently is developing potential assignments for the fellow. Candidates are also encouraged to identify projects on which they would work. The fellowship includes a $25,000 salary, with full benefits, for either a 10-month or 12-month term, depending on the needs of the project.

The deadline to apply for the Eli Segal Fellowship is September 21, 2006.  For further information, a link to the online application, and frequently asked questions, please visit: www.americorps.gov/for_individuals/alumni/segal.asp.
