Colorado
- The Senior Hub RSVP of Adams and Arapahoe Counties is helping local churches load trucks full of clothing for the hurricane victims.
- 4 AmeriCorps*VISTA members are assisting the Mile High Chapter of the American Red Cross with “Give Hope Now,” a newly announced national Red Cross hurricane response volunteer campaign effort to recruit 40,000 new Disaster Services (DSHR) volunteers by November 30. The VISTA members are screening and interviewing applicants while coordinating the volunteer intake center housed directly across from the chapter in downtown Denver. The local goal is to recruit 685 new DSHR volunteers by that same date. More than 30 VISTA members from projects in the Denver Metro Area are rotating for a week at a time at the Red Cross and the evacuee center at the Lowry campus, alongside their AmeriCorps*NCCC colleagues.
- The AmeriCorps*NCCC Central Region campus deployed 31 corps members on October 1 and 4 to the Gulf region in support of FEMA. That number is in addition to the 39 who left on September 1h for Jackson and Gulfport, Miss., and the 31 members supporting the local Red Cross call center and evacuee shelter in Denver.
- The Medical Reserve Corps of Southern Colorado deployed 2 volunteers to Baton Rouge, La., in support of the national American Red Cross response mission and has activated 2 volunteers to work with the local American Red Cross chapter in the intake of volunteers. 33 new Medical Reserve Corps volunteers are being processed.
- The Mesa County Medical Reserve Corps has deployed 15 volunteers with the national American Red Cross mission to the Gulf Coast region and has submitted over 60 more applications. Three volunteers have been working regularly to help process applications at the local American Red Cross chapter, and 50 new volunteers have joined the Corps.
- The Larimer County Medical Reserve Corps volunteers helped the local American Red Cross answer phones and offer training to volunteers deploying to the disaster. One veterinarian who could not deploy is volunteering at the local animal shelter, while other members are helping out in the disaster areas. A nurse practitioner deployed to Baton Rouge, La., and 2 physicians are being deployed with the national American Red Cross.
Hawaii
- An RSVP volunteer who is a former VISTA member was sent by Hawaii Red Cross to Montgomery, Ala., to support efforts for Hurricane Katrina.
Rhode Island
- Cranston RSVP volunteers have prepared cloth squares for the students to make quilts for the victims of hurricane Katrina. The fabric was donated by Cranston Print Works.
