Mississippi
- 24 VISTA members at the Delta State University/Center for Community and Economic Development program are performing disaster relief activities, Cleveland, Greenville, and Greenwood, mostly by serving at shelters.
- VISTA members at the Youth Excitement Team are setting up four shelters and a food pantry for evacuees to the Meridian area.
- 50 Lowndes County RSVP volunteers in Columbus are working through the American Red Cross to assist evacuees with services, provide bedding for families in shelters, process debit cards, and perform other duties.
- 25 Kosciusko RSVP volunteers are assisting with services delivered at a temporary shelter.
- 5 Hattiesburg FGP volunteers are working in area shelters to assist with children who are displaced from Biloxi and Gulfport.
Elsewhere
- In Arizona, 28 RSVP volunteers who serve at the Time Out Domestic Abuse Shelter in Payson are working with the local chapter of the American Red Cross and collecting and distributing good-quality or new clothing.
- The Citizen Action AmeriCorps program assisted with the intake of evacuees and volunteers at the Coliseum in Phoenix.
- Four NCCC members are volunteering on their own time to assist the American Red Cross Call Center in Wilmington, Del.
- In Florida, AmeriCorps members from Gadsden Reads served as hotline operators.
- AmeriCorps Florida State Parks members are assisting in clean-up efforts in the Miami area, including by removing debris and fallen trees at Cape Florida State Park, the Barnacle Historic State Park, Oleta River State Park, and Hugh Taylor Birch State Park.
- VISTA members are serving at an evacuee center in Wichita, Kan.
- AmeriCorps members with the Christian Appalachian Project in Lancaster, Ky., are organizing volunteers to be sent by bus each week to disaster sites to help in soup kitchens and with early clean-up; additional volunteers are helping operate drop-off sites for donated supplies around the state.
- Frostburg State University AmeriCorps members in Frostburg, Md., are supporting an evacuee center in nearby West Virginia that will provide shelter for 500 evacuees.
- Three VISTA members at City Gates Ministry in Kansas City, Mo., are working with community volunteers to organize a fundraising concert on September 23.
- AmeriCorps members at Guilford College are supporting a Second Harvest Food Drive and preparing to serve meals for over 500 evacuees in Greensboro, N.C.
- In Ohio, 3 VISTA members with the Summit County American Red Cross in Akron are assisting with volunteer coordination, phone bank services, fundraising, family services, and training new volunteers. VISTA members are involved in similar efforts at Red Cross chapters in Portage County, Jefferson County, Hocking County, Gallia County Athens/Vinton County, Coshocton, and the Ohio River Valley, while several others have been deployed to the disaster area to assist with relief efforts.
- The Quaker Valley High School Service-Learning Program in Sewickley, Pa., is organizing a fund-raising drive to help rebuild a high school in New Orleans.
- RSVP inRutland, Vt., is spearheading a relief effort to collect, pack, and label goods for hurricane survivors at five locations in Rutland County.
- RSVP of Waukesha County, Wis., is collecting toys, hats, baby blankets, and other items for shipment to Mississippi.
- In Wisconsin, 18 Walworth County RSVP volunteers took shifts at the Walworth County Fair and raised $11,500 for the American Red Cross disaster relief effort.
- The Volunteer Center in Appleton sent 6 RSVPs to assist the local Red Cross with donations and phone calls, and sent 4 RSVPs to assist the Salvation Army.
