David DeMarini Elected President of the International Association of Environmental Mutagen Societies

Dr. David DeMarini US EPA scientist Dr. David DeMarini has been elected President of the International Association of Environmental Mutagen Societies (IAEMS). Its primary purpose is to provide a means whereby those engaged in environmental mutagenesis research and related fields in all countries may communicate more readily with each other, and through this process, advance both basic and applied research in this area.

As Dr. DeMarini recently stated, "One of my goals, will be to coordinate much of the activities of these societies to get them to better collaborate and work with a whole host of groups to advance environmental mutagen research."

This is a 4-year appointment that involves leading this umbrella organization of the eleven regional environmental mutagen societies around the world (North America, Latin America, China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, India, Philippines, Australia/New Zealand, Europe, and Africa). These societies have a combined membership of 12,000 scientists in the field of genetic toxicology and environmental mutagenesis.

Besides coordinating the activities of these societies, the IAEMS also helps produce several other conferences, most particularly the International Conference on Environmental Mutagens (ICEM), which is held every 4 years and involves the participation of all 11 regional societies.
