Community Information

Washington D.C, capital of the United States is the center of a metropolitan area (2003 pop. 5.1 million) extending into Maryland and Virginia. With the city of Baltimore to its north in Maryland, it forms a consolidated metropolitan area of some 7 million people. Washington is the legislative, administrative, and judicial center of the United States. Its business is government, and hundreds of thousands are so employed in the metropolitan area.

The city is a major tourist attraction and a cultural center. The D.C. Metro Area can be an exciting place to live and work. Some of the best schools and medical services in the Nation are found in the area. There are exceptional opportunities to visit historical places and museums and experience the diverse cultural environment of the Nation's capital.

Recreational Opportunities

Besides the traditional urban recreational amenities, outstanding natural beauty is within a few hours reach of the D.C. Metro Area. Close at hand is the Great Falls of the Potomac, administered by the National Park Service.

Further to the west, adventures can be found within the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland.

Nestled within these mountains are the Shenandoah National Park, Blue Ridge Parkway, George Washington National Forest, and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. The Shenandoah River as it approaches its confluence with the Potomac River in a gap through the Blue Ridge Mountains offers white water rafting opportunities.

For history buffs, numerous Civil War battlefields are within the Tri-State area. Civil War re-enactments can be enjoyed throughout the summer and autumn months. Manassas and Antietam National Battlefields and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park are close at hand.

The beaches of the Eastern Shore of Maryland are a popular recreational destination especially Assateague Island National Seashore. For those of you who remember reading Misty of Chincoteague during your youth, fiction comes to life as the ponies of Chincoteague stroll the beaches and grasslands of Assateague Island National Seashore and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.

Transportation

Transportation facilities within the D.C. Metro Area include a subway and bus system that connects the city with many suburbs. Commuter rail systems in MD and VA serve the outer metro area. The main rail center is Union Station in Washington D.C. Ronald Reagan Washington National and Dulles International airports in Virginia, and Baltimore-Washington International Airport in Maryland provide air service in the Washington D.C. area.

Weather and Climate

Summer in Washington (June to August) can be hot and humid, with temperatures often passing 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius). From late November to March there usually is some snow and ice. However, the accumulated snow and ice generally melts in short order. Spring and autumn are usually long and very pleasant.
