Technical Abstract: Industrial-scale production of fuel ethanol from biomass continues to show promise for relieving dependence upon petroleum-based transportation fuels. The limited range of materials that can be practically converted, however, continues to be an obstacle to the lignocellulosic revolution. Therefore, the development of practical biocatalysts for the conversion of ligncocellulosic feedstocks into biofuels remains a significant technical challenge to the industry. We will describe our efforts in engineering biocatalysts, including yeast and bacteria, for the production of bioethanol from cellulosic feedstocks.
