WWC IRDPJ08 JOBSTART
JOBSTART is an alternative education and training program designed to improve the economic prospects of young, disadvantaged high school dropouts by increasing educational attainment and developing occupational skills. The program has four main components: (1) basic academic skills instruction with a focus on GED (General Educational Development) preparation, (2) occupational skills training, (3) training-related support services (such as transportation assistance and childcare), and (4) job placement assistance. Participants receive at least 200 hours of basic education and 500 hours of occupational training.

NCES 2008322 Education Longitudinal Study of 2002/06 Data Analysis System (DAS)
The ELS:2002/06 Data Analysis System (DAS) contains base year, first follow-up, and second follow-up data on a sample of about 16,000 students who were first surveyed as high school sophomores in the spring of 2004. The first follow-up occurred in the spring 2004, when most of the sample members were high school seniors. The second follow-up occurred in 2006 when most of the sample members who attended college were college sophomores. Both those who attended college and those who didn’t are included in the data. Data in the DAS pertain to the courses taken and achievement of the sample members when they were in high school, their family backgrounds and other experiences in high school. For those who considered going to college, there is data on which colleges they applied to, and the acceptances and aid offers they received from those colleges. Other data include the employment experiences of both those who attended college and those who didn't, the earnings and some aspects of the work situation of those who did not attend college, and, for both those who attended college and didn't, data about other life experiences and outcomes, such as military service, volunteer service, and family formation. WWC IRDPNCH08 New Chance
New Chance, a program for young welfare mothers who have dropped out of school, aims to improve both their employment potential and their parenting skills. Participants take GED (General Educational Development) preparation classes and complete a parenting and life skills curriculum. Once they complete this first phase of the program, they can receive occupational training and job placement assistance from New Chance, which also offers case management and child care.

NCES 2008346 Education Longitudinal Study of 2002/06: Restricted Use Second Follow-up Data Files, Data File Documentation, and Electronic Codebook System
This ELS:2002/2004 CD includes the restricted-use base-year, first follow-up, high school transcript, second follow-up data, and the electronic codebook. The data documentation is also included on the CD. The data documentation is public use and can be downloaded directly as NCES 2008-346. This study is designed to monitor a national sample of young people as they progress from tenth grade through high school and on to postsecondary education and/or the world of work.

WWC IRDPPG07 Project GRAD
Project “Graduation Really Achieves Dreams” (GRAD) is an initiative for students in economically disadvantaged communities that aims to reduce dropping out and increase rates of college enrollment and graduation by increasing reading and math skills, improving behavior in school, and providing a service safety net. At the high school level, Project GRAD provides four-year college scholarships and summer institutes to promote attending and completing high school. Project GRAD also provides services in those elementary and middle schools that feed in to the participating high schools.

WWC IRDPTD07 Talent Development High Schools
Talent Development High Schools is a school reform model for restructuring large high schools with persistent attendance and discipline problems, poor student achievement, and high dropout rates. The model includes both structural and curriculum reforms. It calls for schools to reorganize into small "learning communities"—including ninth-grade academies for first-year students and career academies for students in upper grades—to reduce student isolation and anonymity. It also emphasizes high academic standards and provides all students with a college-preparatory academic sequence.

WWC IRDPQO07 Quantum Opportunity Program
The Quantum Opportunity Program (QOP) is an intensive and comprehensive program for high school-aged youth that offers case management, mentoring, tutoring, and other education and support services. The program also offers financial incentives for participation in program activities. Participants enter QOP in the ninth grade and can receive services for four to five years, even if they drop out of school or move to another district.

NCES 2007059 Dropout Rates in the United States: 2005
This report builds upon a series of National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reports on high school dropout and completion rates that began in 1988. It presents estimates of rates for 2005, and provides data about trends in dropout and completion rates over the last three decades (1972-2005), including characteristics of dropouts and completers in these years. Among other findings, the report shows that in students living in low-income families were approximately six times more likely to drop out of high school between 2004 and 2005 than of their peers from high-income families.

WWC IRDPHSR07 High School Redirection
High School Redirection is an alternative high school program for youth considered at risk of dropping out. The program emphasizes basic skills development (with a particular focus on reading skills) and offers limited extra-curricular activities. The schools operate in economically disadvantaged areas and serve students who have dropped out in the past, who are teen parents, who have poor test scores, or who are over-age for their grade. To foster a sense of community, the schools are small and teachers are encouraged to act as mentors as well as instructors.

WWC IRDPTT07 Twelve Together
Twelve Together is a one-year peer support and mentoring program for middle and early high school students that offers weekly after-school discussion groups led by trained volunteer adult facilitators. Each peer discussion group consists of about 12 participants, who are a mix of students at high risk of academic failure and others at lower academic risk. Group discussions are based on student interest, usually focusing on personal, family, and social issues. The program also offers homework assistance, trips to college campuses, and an annual weekend retreat.

WWC IRDPMC07 Middle College High School
Middle College High Schools are alternative high schools located on college campuses that aim to help at-risk students complete high school and encourage them to attend college. The schools offer a project-centered, interdisciplinary curriculum, with an emphasis on team teaching, individualized attention, and development of critical thinking skills. Students are also offered support services, including specialized counseling, peer support, and career experience opportunities.

NCES 2007345 Documentation to the NCES Common Core of Data Local Education Agency Universe Survey Dropout and Completion Restricted-Use Data File: School Year 2003-04. Preliminary File
This preliminary file contains the numbers of 2003-04 diploma recipients and the numbers of other high school completers for each public school district in the United States with a 12th grade. The data were reported to NCES on the 2003-04 Common Core of Data and are broken out by gender and by race/ethnicity. The final file will include dropout data as well. Your organization must apply for and be granted a restricted use data license in order to obtain these data.
