2008 Rio Yaqui Fish Monitoring Completed for San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge
Southwest Region, November 13, 2008
Print Friendly Version
The annual fish monitoring for the federally listed Yaqui chub (Gila purpurea), Yaqui topminnow (Poeciliopsis sonoriensis), Yaqui beautiful shiner (Cyprinella formosa) and the Yaqui catfish (Ictalurus pricei), as well as other species of concern in the region, was completed in November.  There are 15 sites that are surveyed each year, 14 that are on San Bernardino NWR and the creek that runs through Leslie Canyon NWR.  In addition to those 15 sites, Black Draw on San Bernardino NWR is electro-shocked to measure for density of fish in stream sections.  The occupancy rates for Yaqui chub are the same as last year at just over 35% while the occupancy rate for Yaqui topminnow is down from last year at 65.7% compared to 76.1%.   Twenty-two Yaqui catfish were captured this year with ten of those being recaptures.  Fish density in Black Draw was up for Yaqui topminnow, but down for the other three species found in Black Draw compared to 2007.  Mexican longfin dace and Yaqui topminnow are the chief inhabitants of this lotic habitat, with a few Yaqui chub and Mexican stoneroller (Campostoma ornatum) being found.  Density of fish per meter of stream length of longfin dace in Black Draw was .06 and Yaqui topminnow density was 5.1.  Of other note, three Mexican stonerollers were captured during the electro-shocking of Black Draw.  This is down from 2007.  As with last year different age classes of the stoneroller were found during this year’s monitoring.
