Recognition of Land Stewardship on Santo Domingo Pueblo by the Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program By, Nancy Baczek, New Mexico Ecological Svcs
Southwest Region, October 23, 2008
Print Friendly Version

On October 23, 2008, Partners for Fish and Wildlife staff attended an Open House at Santo Domingo Pueblo.  At this time the Governor and Lt. Governor of Santo Domingo Pueblo were presented with certificates of appreciation, a Partners Program twentieth anniversary commemorative belt buckle, and a Partners Program field hat.  The Director and staff of the Natural Resources Department and their financial officer were also presented with certificates of appreciation and Partners Program pins.   Santo Domingo Pueblo has been very active in land restoration, conservation, and educational projects on the Tribal land and for the Tribal people.  Since 2005, 250 acres of riparian, wetland, and open water habitat has been restored and protected by trash removal, non-native plant removal, native vegetation plantings, and cattle exclusion fencing with technical assistance and funding from the Partners Program.

Partners Staff also participated in their Earth Day education program.  The Open House included a visit to the project sites with Tribal Council members and demonstration of mechanical extraction of non-native vegetation.  The Tribal Council members have asked the Partners Program to continue working with them on future restoration projects.
