Guided Tours to See Kirtland's Warbler Attract Birdwatchers from Around the Globe
Midwest Region, September 30, 2008
Print Friendly Version
Avid birdwatchers from all over the world travel to northern Michigan each year hoping to catch a glimpse of one of the world's rarest songbirds.  There are fewer than 2,000 Kirtland's warbler singing males in the entire world population, and for many birders, seeing a Kirtland's warbler is one of their ultimate goals.  To aid the visitors in their search, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's East Lansing Field Office, with assistance from the Michigan Audubon Society, conduct guided tours to selected warbler breeding areas.  Because the Kirtland's warbler's nesting habitat is closed to entry, these tours provide the best opportunity to see a Kirtland's warbler.

Tours were offered from May 15 through July 4 at 7:00 am and 11:00 am daily.  The participants met at the Ramada Inn, in Grayling, Michigan, to watch a short video introducing the Kirtland's warbler.  After the video, the tour guide led the visitors to a jack pine plantation outside Grayling to show them the jack pine ecosystem and a Kirtland's warbler.

The 2008 Kirtland's warbler U.S. Fish and Wildlife/Michigan Audubon Society tours had 436 participants from 35 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Norway.  A Kirtland's warbler was seen on all but two tours and 55 other species were seen during the tours.

The U.S. Forest Service also conducts Kirtland's warbler tours out of the Mio Ranger District in Mio, Michigan.  A total of 339 participants attended the U.S. Forest Service Kirtland's warbler tours in 2008.
