The Patuxent Research Refuge celebrated National Hunting and Fishing Day on Sunday, September 14th at the North Tract of the Refuge. The public was invited to participate in guided conservation hikes, target practice for shooting and archery and watch working dogs retrieve.  Information and displays about hunter safety and hunting and fishing opportunities in the area were also available for visitors. Exhibitors/participants included the Meade Natural Heritage Association, National Wild Turkey Federation, Ducks Unlimited, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Gun Dog Supply, and Maryland State Chapter Quality Deer Management Association.

According to Refuge Manager, Brad Knudsen, "Hunting and Fishing Day celebrates all wildlife conservation efforts and especially the contributions of hunters and anglers in conserving our natural habitats and wildlife resources". The vast lands that make up the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Wildlife Refuge System provide not only habitats for wildlife, but provide opportunities for people to enjoy wildlife-related recreational activities such as wildlife photography, bird watching, hunting, fishing and interpretive and educational programs.  We hope people in the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area will take advantage of the opportunities provided by Patuxent and other wildlife refuges in the area.
