Journal Entry   Back Similarity of Appearance Briefing at Midwest Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies Director’s Meeting Midwest Region, July 17, 2008 Print Friendly Version Project Leader Tracy Hill traveled to Estes Park, Colorado on 30 June to attend the Midwest Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies Director’s Meeting.  Dr. Hill was asked to provide a technical presentation on the potential listing of shovelnose sturgeon due to similarity of appearance with pallid sturgeon.  Four states in the Midwest currently have shovelnose sturgeon caviar fisheries that are hampering recovery efforts for pallid sturgeon.  Due to the difficulty in distinguishing pallids from shovelnose sturgeon and due the documented take of pallid sturgeon in these fisheries the Fish and Wildlife Service is very concerned about this impact on pallid sturgeon populations in the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.  Dr. Hill gave a Power Point presentation to the group providing details of the issue.  The meeting is a senior level management meeting of natural resources professionals in the fields of wildlife and fisheries management.  The Midwest Association includes the states of Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, and the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario.
