The staircases will provide visitors an easier and safer access route to a popular fishing and hunting lake.  The lake also called a scour was scoured out by the 1993 Missouri River flood.  The 11 acre lake provides anglers opportunities to catch bass, crappie, bluegill, and several species of catfish and carp. It also provides an area where hunters may harvest ducks.  The side trail along the lake also provides opportunities for wildlife observation. 

The project required several work days and provided the refuge with 320 hours of volunteer labor from 11 boy scouts and 6 parents.  An 11”x 14” sign will be posted at the top of each staircase to acknowledge the work completed by Alex and Scout Troop 4 from Columbia, Missouri.
