Community members enjoyed shade grown coffee before setting out on a birding expedition.

In celebration of International Migratory Bird Day Koyukuk National Wildlife Refuge held a bird walk and “Songbird Coffeehouse” event.  Galena community members were invited to participate in an hour long bird-walk to look for recently arrived migrants as well as year-round resident birds.  Following the bird walk they had shade-grown coffee and snacks in the building shared with the local University of Alaska Fairbanks branch.  A DVD was shown about the impacts of the coffee trade on songbird habitat and the benefits of fair-trade and shade-grown certification programs.  IMBD posters and t-shirts were given away at the event.
