Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge biologist Maurry Mills served as the judge at the Wildlife Station at the Downeast Region Envirothon held on May 1, 2008 at the Greenland Point Environmental Center in Princeton, Maine.  Four teams from three Washington County schools participated in the competition.

Each team must complete a practical test in each of four subject areas: aquatics, forestry, soils, and wildlife.  They must also prepare a poster and do an oral presentation on a current topic.  This year's current topic was the impact of recreation on the environment.

Two teams from Washington Academy in East Machias, and one team each from Lubec and Jonesport-Beals High Schools attended the envirothon.  Washington Academy Team A took first place, Jonesport-Beals took second, and Washington Academy Team B took third place.  Lubec High School's score was only ten points below the third place team.

The teams prepare for the competition throughout the school year.  The top three teams from each regional competition attend the State competition.  Moosehorn NWR staff have assisted with regional and state envirothons for the past 23 years.
