The Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program in New Mexico funded habitat enhancement work at an existing outdoor classroom on Santa Ana Pueblo, Sandoval County, New Mexico.  The Pueblo has developed an outdoor classroom, used by the Bernalillo Public Schools and local tribal residents, located along a 1.3-mile stretch of the Rio Grande, within 28 acres of bosque.  The outdoor classroom has 0.75 mile of interpretive walking trails, dominated by mature cottonwood trees.  The purpose of this project is to reintroduce oyster mushrooms at the existing outdoor classroom area.  Oyster mushrooms were once abundant and tribal members historically collected the mushrooms during fall months and dried them for use throughout the year.  The mushrooms are a traditional food source that was and still is used, however, the mushrooms are very rare and difficult to find today.  In addition to the oyster mushroom reintroduction, the Pueblo will plant other traditionally important native food sources including wild plum and chokecherry shrubs.  This will complement the oyster mushroom introduction and help to reestablish the historical flora of the bosque and increase the vegetation cover and plant species diversity.
