On January 28, 2008, the Arlington Field Office completed a formal consultation with the Army National Guard on behalf of the Texas Military Forces regarding military training activities and the implementation of the Camp Maxey Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP).  The biological opinion addressed the endangered American burying beetle which occurs at Camp Maxey in Lamar County and represents the only known population of the species in Texas.  Approximately 6,290 acres of unimproved grounds are available for light and heavy maneuver training, basic infantry skills, land navigation courses, tracked and wheeled vehicle training, and other training for combat readiness. INRMP and associated land management activities analyzed for potential impact to the American burying beetle were prescribed fire, pesticide use, red imported fire ant control and feral hog management.  The Arlington Field Office will continue to assist the Army National Guard in assessing ongoing research and monitoring of the species at Camp Maxey to better understand the conservation management needs of the species locally and rangewide.
