Over 100 Volunteers Assist with Annual Coastal Cleanup at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region, September 15, 2007
Print Friendly Version

During Coastsweep 2007, Parker River National Wildlife Refuge in cooperation with the Massachusetts Audubon-Joppa Flats Center conducted the annual cleanup on Saturday September 15.  Despite overcast skies and rain, over 100 volunteers collected trash along 7 miles of beach on Plum Island covering the refuge and Sandy Point State Reservation.

Refuge staff, along with a member of the Friends of Parker River NWR and Massachusetts Beach Buggy Association, removed the collected trash off the beach and filled a large dumpster, donated by a local company, with over 2.5 tons of material, almost double the weight collected in 2005.  The majority of material collected was plastics, but also included tires, lobster buoys, glass, construction lumber, and other materials.  On Sunday and Monday, refuge staff continued to remove bags of trash collected by volunteers.
