Journal Entry   Back Chicago Illinois Field Office aids in protecting 288 acres of wetland through Section 404 project reviews in FY 2007 Midwest Region, September 17, 2007 Print Friendly Version In FY 2007, the Chicago Illinois Field Office (CIFO) reviewed and commented on 79 Pre-Construction and Public Notices (PCNs and PNs) proposed for authorization by the Chicago District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act.  The wetland impacts are a result of various types of activities including residential and commercial developments, bridge and culvert replacements, shoreline stabilization and road improvement projects.  Total impacts for these projects were 42.08 acres of jurisdictional wetland loss.  Based in part on our comments, the compensation required to offset these impacts totaled 287.80 acres of mitigation, resulting in a mitigation ratio of over a 6.5:1.   CIFO’s involvement with these projects very likely resulted in a higher mitigation total, because we have recommended that additional mitigation and/or higher mitigation ratios be required for some projects.  Mitigation options include onsite mitigation, offsite mitigation, and the purchase of bank credits at one of several mitigation banks in the six county Chicago area.  Mitigation includes: wetland restoration, enhancement, or creation; and stream bank stabilization and in-stream measures.    Contact Info: Midwest Region Public Affairs, 612-713-5313, charles_traxler@fws.gov Send to: From: Notes: ..........................................................................................
