Maine Beaches Conference 2007
Northeast Region, June 22, 2007
Print Friendly Version
On June 22, 2007, staff from the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge attended the Maine Beaches Conference at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland. Public officials, property owners, recreational beach users, business owners, and others came together to exchange information and discuss the use of the shoreline and how this use is changing. Prominent speakers included Cameron Wake, Ph. D., researcher and Assistant Professor at University of New Hampshire, who spoke on climate change and the urgency of our actions, and Margaret Davidson, Director of the NOAA Coastal Services Center, who spoke on how we can protect our communities and resources from extreme weather. Additional session topics included bacteria measurement, shifting sands and the priorities for different groups, as well as posters from several research institutes and non-profit agencies presenting information about their work. The conference provided an opportunity for people with different interests in the beach to come together to discuss a common goal: how to preserve the shoreline for everyone.
