This year’s annual Jakes Day in Joy, Ill. was a success.  Rock Island Field Office staff biologist, Kraig McPeek participated in the educational kickoff on April 14th, hosting a nature walk for nearly 100 elementary school children from Mercer County and surrounding areas.

Jake’s day participants were taken on a nature walk through woods, reconstructed prairie and a surrounding cornfield.  They viewed a tree planting on top of a hill and discussed the importance of habitat and diversity (or "having lots of different stuff" as the kids would say).

While taking students on a casual walk fielding questions and comments McPeek had the unique opportunity to have direct interactions with these young aspiring biologists.  Much of the time was spent discussing the significance of deer and raccoon trails, buck rubs, bird nests, and pretty much anything that the kids found interesting.

As a special treat, McPeek spoke about the property owners use of solar energy and its importance as a source of clean energy.
