Journal Entry   Back High School and Junior High students assist with native fish surveys in Aravaipa Creek Southwest Region, April 20, 2007 Print Friendly Version Loren Souza and Andy Pellistri from Thunderbird High School in Phoenix and Caitlin Smith from Mt. Eldon Middle School in Flagstaff  assisted the University of Arizona, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Bureau of Land Management in surveying native fish in Aravaipa Creek in southeastern Arizona on April 20 to 22.  The students spent the weekend with researchers and agency biologists catching, recording, and releasing native fish at 10 different sampling stations.  They were able to actually use seine nets and help collect fish.  Two the fish species, spikedace and loach minnow, are designated as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. This activity is part of a pilot cirricula designed to integrate wildlife and natural resource issues and oppurtunities with students to promote an interest in wildlife and the outdoors as encouraged by Interior Secretary Kempthorne and FWS Regional Director Tuggle..
