Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge Achieves 100 Percent Air Quality Data Collection in Third Quarter of 2006
Northeast Region, February 2, 2007
Print Friendly Version

Staff at the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge attained 100 percent data collection for the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) station during the third quarter of 2006.  Staff must travel to the station each Tuesday to record data and change filter cartridges.

The Moosehorn Wilderness Areas have been designated as Class 1 air quality areas.  The IMPROVE station provides a means to monitor the air quality in the vicinity of the refuge.  The air quality station is part of a nation wide network that provides information on the levels of various air borne pollutants.

Staff at Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge have been monitoring air quality since 1984.  The monitoring station also contains a high resolution digital camera that takes a photo every 15 minutes and sends it to a web site that is available to the public (www.hazecam.net).

The hazecam program was set up to monitor regional haze and educate the public about air quality issues.
