ANCHORAGE: Expert Crew Embarks to Fight Fires "Down Under"
Alaska Region, January 19, 2007
Print Friendly Version
You scratch my moose back, and I’ll scratch your ‘Roo back.  The US Fish and Wildlife Service Region 7 Branch of Fire Management is sending Mary Kwart (Situation Unit Leader) and Robert Lambrecht (Division/Group Supervisor) to assist the Australians in wildland fire suppression.  Mary and Bob, part of a group of 107 federal fire personnel, will be traveling to Melbourne, Australia, beginning January 22, for about one month.  Catastrophic fires burning over 2.6 million acres have caused loss of electricity to cities and destroyed numerous structures in the State of Victoria.

Thanks to the 2002 amended “Wildfire Suppression Assistance Act”, the US is able to provide assistance to Australia and New Zealand for wildland fire suppression.  For nearly 20 years, we have shared other fire management expertise in areas like training, observation of operational procedures, prescribed fire programs, use of equipment, prevention and education, and how each country uses volunteer resources.

Sharing fire resources also emphasizes how universally effective the Incident Command System can be across all borders.  The Aussies delivered fire assistance resources to the US in 2000, 2002, and 2006.  It is great that the Service can reciprocate by providing these highly trained and experienced fire managers to support our friends Down Under.
