Refuge staff continued their work on installing a vehicle barrier along the International Border this month.  The barrier is set 60 feet off the border in accordance with the Department of Homeland Security's right of way along the U.S./Mexico boundary.  The barrier is constructed from 6"x6" steel posts that are sunk in the ground, filled with cement and cemented inplace with steel rails joining the posts.  The posts are placed at intervals that would limit the passage of a vehicle, but allows for the movement of wildlife.  The barrier is an on going project that was started in 2005 and is entirely funded by refuge funds.  The project is expected to be completed sometime in 2007 or early 2008.
