Banner Year for Beach Nesters at Long Island National Wildlife Refuges
Northeast Region, August 31, 2006
Print Friendly Version
Morton National Wildlife Refuge in Sag Harbor and Amagansett National Wildlife Refuge in Easthampton experienced their most productive beach nesting bird season in recent years.  Six pairs of federally threatened piping plovers raised 14 chicks while 51 pairs of New York state threatened least terns raised 35 chicks on the refuges' beaches.  This year's success can be credited in large part to beach closures and management efforts which included erecting fencing around nests and colonies.
