Iroquois Natioanl Wildlife RefugeRecognizes Volunteers at Picnic and Awards Ceremony
Northeast Region, August 11, 2006
Print Friendly Version
Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in New York held a volunteer recognition picnic on Friday August 11 which was attended by eighteen refuge volunteers as well as their family and friends. A brief meeting covering government policy, training, safety, wildlife diseases and volunteer opportunities preceded the sit down catered and potluck lunch and awards ceremony.

Refuge Manager Thomas Roster presented Carl Zenger with the Take Pride in America Presidential Award in recognition for 4000 hours of service. In addition, he presented individual recognition awards to all volunteers.  The awards encompassed both the longevity and commitment of the volunteers as well as total number of hours worked.  Each volunteer received a thermos imprinted with the Service and refuge emblems.

Although they did not receive the national award for which they were nominated, The Friends of Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, Inc. received a certificate from Take Pride in America recognizing their important and dedicated work with the refuge.

By the end July 2006 volunteers had contributed over 3800 hours this year at a value of $68,687, the equivalent of 1.83 FTE's.  Volunteers support a variety of programs at the refuge, including school group visits and special events, maintenance of trails and overlooks, and habitat management.
