La Crosse FRO Completes Asian Carp Surveillance
Midwest Region, August 15, 2006
Print Friendly Version

Service staff from La Crosse FRO conducted a two-day surveillance for Asian carp in the Des Plaines and Illinois Rivers, in mid-August.

No Asian carp species were captured or detected within a 50-mile downstream range of an electrical fish barrier at any of the five sites surveyed.

This Service-led effort completed surveillance requirements for the month to determine whether Asian carp are approaching the barrier, which is designed to prevent these fish from entering Lake Michigan.

The responsibility for conducting surveillance for Asian carp is shared and rotated monthly among the Service, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Army Crops of Engineers, and Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
