Journal Entry   Back 12th Annual Migration Celebration held at Texas Mid-Coast NWR Complex Southwest Region, April 8, 2006 Print Friendly Version The 12th annual Migration Celebration was held April 6-9.  A night-critters walk at the Hudson Woods Unit of San Bernard NWR kicked off the event on Thursday night.  The Friday night event consisted of a sit-down seafood dinner at the new River Place Center in Freeport.  The keynote speaker was birder Gene Sparling who is famous for having sighted the ivory-billed woodpecker near the White River in Arkansas.  Sparling gave a wonderful presentation to about 120 people.  Saturday’s activities were held at the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge.  Activities included track making, bug sweeping, up-close look at reptiles, and exploring the environment through microscopes for kids, programs on birding, butterflies, and reptiles for the adults, guided van, marsh buggy, and horse-drawn wagon tours, and a “Birds of Prey” demonstration.  About 400 people enjoyed the Saturday event in spite of the extremely windy conditions.  On Sunday, the celebration moved to the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory in Lake Jackson with guided nature walks, birding presentations, and two additional Birds of Prey shows.  Overall, about 800 people enjoyed the four-day event.  As a part of the Migration Celebration week, the Friends of Brazoria Refuges, with multiple corporate donors, sponsored the Birds of Prey shows at twelve area schools which reached almost 7,000 school children and teachers this year.
