Journal Entry   Back Inmates Cut Salt Cedar at Sevilleta NWR Southwest Region, March 1, 2006 Print Friendly Version During March and April 2006, inmate work crews from the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility in Los Lunas worked on Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge treating salt cedar.  Unit A was the target for cut-stump treatment whereby the inmates and their leaders from New Mexico State Forestry used chain-saws to cut salt cedar trees and then applied herbicide to the stumps helping eradicate the invasive species.  Approximately 2 acres were treated.  Inmate crews are a cost-effective and skilled labor force. Most members of the crew have worked long, hard, unsavory jobs to be chosen for this “elite” position, and they don’t want to lose the privilege.  A “bonus” for working the refuge this time was a sighting of a mountain lion while trimming the trees near the Rio Grande. This is Phase I of the project funded through New Mexico Fire District Wildland Urban Interface money.  Phase II will begin in the fall.
