Oklahoma FRO Conducts Paddlefish Brood Stock Collection for Future Red River Paddlefish Stocking Projects
Southwest Region, March 1, 2006
Print Friendly Version

Adult paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) were collected by staff from the Oklahoma Fishery Resources Office on the Lower Red River near Natchitoches, Louisiana, using monofilament gill nets. The purpose of this effort was to catch sexually mature paddlefish and use them as broodstock for future paddlefish stocking projects in Lake Texoma on the Upper Red River and the Washita River. Nets were set at four different sites in habitats ranging from backwater areas to jetties that are connected to the main stem river channel. The fish were taken back to Natchitoches National Fish Hatchery where they were spawned. This effort was successful despite low water conditions on the river. Approximately 161,000 viable paddlefish fry were produced. The young fry were then transferred to Tishomingo National Fish Hatchery for growing and eventual stocking in Lake Texoma. Paddlefish are collected on the Lower Red River and stocked in the Upper Red River to increase genetic diversity while also maintaining genetic integrity within the Red River basin. We appreciate the assistance of Natchitoches National Fish Hatchery, as well as Mr. Brad Bufkin who volunteered over 70 hours for this effort.
