Journal Entry   Back First Regional Firefighting, Fire Management, and Fire Prevention Training in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico Southwest Region, February 10, 2006 Print Friendly Version   A fire training course was given by the Service to Parque Ecológico Chipinque in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.  Service personnel, Mark Kaib (Albuquerque Regional Office Wildland Fire Ecologist), Eliseo “Chito” Garcia (South Texas Refuge Complex Fire Prevention Officer), Ernesto Reyes (Corpus Christi Ecological Services Field Office - Alamo Suboffice Fish and Widlife Biologist) participated in the training.  Ernesto provided translation for the Service’s presentations.  This training resulted from discussions during a past visit from the Director of Chipinque Park to the Santa Ana NWR, and an established MOU between Chipinque Park and Santa Ana NWR.  The fire training consisted of S-130, S-190 and standards for survival, fire ecology, fire prevention, fire management, fire causes, and fire investigation.  Forest fire coordinators of CONAFOR (a federal agency in Mexico) for the State of Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, and Coahuila presented their contingency plan for fire control, fire prevention, and firefighting strategies.  Also, there was a sandbox fire simulation exercise on the last day so that participants could apply all of the firefighting coordination skills.  The 48 participants included the Service personnel mentioned above, as well as, Mexico representatives from CONAFOR, two universities (Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon School of Forestry and Universidad Autonoma de Agraria Antonio Narro), local Civil Defense employees, local EMT’s and Parque Chipinque employees.
