Northeast Region, September 1, 2005
Print Friendly Version
In 2005, the Rural Fire Assistance program awarded 36 grants worth $154,033 to fire departments in ME (7 grants worth $26,912), VT (2 grants worth $6,701), MA (9 grants worth $41,936), RI (2 grants worth $7,931), NJ (8 grants worth $29,975), NY (4 grants worth $12,557), PA (2 grants worth $8,482), MD (1 grant worth $1,539), and VA (1 grant worth $18,000).  Most grant recipients were cooperators with fire protection responsibility to local refuges and fish hatcheries.  Grant funds were used for a variety of purposes to increase local wildland fire preparedness and response.  Items funded included the rehabilitation of existing brush trucks, purchasing personal protective equipment, hose, hand tools, portable water tanks, pumps, and wildland fire training.  Overall, there were approximately 200 fire departments in the Northeast Region eligible to participate in the RFA program.  In addition, the Regional Fire Management Office conducted thirty  site visits to monitor fire department compliance from the 2004 grant program, and developed press releases for Refuge and Hatchery Managers to use in announcing the grant awards.
