Third conservation easement purchased at Rappahannock River Valley Refuge
Northeast Region, August 26, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On August 26, 2005, the Rappahannock River Valley NWR grew by 325.8 acres with the purchase of a conservation easement from the Menokin Foundation. This brings the total refuge area to over 7700 acres, including 1359 acres in easements. The Menokin easement will permanently protect 1.7 miles of forested riparian habitat along Cat Point Creek, a tidal tributary of the Rappahannock River and among the refuge's highest priority focus areas. Cat Point Creek is designated as a bald eagle concentration area, with 80 to 100 eagles having been observed in a single day. The property is the ancestral home of Francis Lightfoot Lee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
