Sachuest Point NWR Project Garners EPA Award
Northeast Region, May 16, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The Service's V.A. Sridhar, an environmental engineer with the Denver Pollution Control Office was recently awarded the 2005 EPA Environmental Merit Award for his efforts in restoring a former landfill at the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in Middletown, Rhode Island. This award is among the highest honor EPA can bestow to recognize environmental accomplishments. U.S. Senator Lincoln Chafee nominated Mr. Sridhar for the award based on the dramatic results achieved in converting an improperly closed 21-acre former municipal landfill into a series of habitats that compliment the adjacent refuge lands. Prior to project initiation, conditions at the former landfill would have had the potential to leach contaminants into an adjacent estuary. However, through the restoration process, hazardous waste was identified, removed, and disposed of properly. Household appliances and more than 200 tires were also removed and recycled. The resulting site reclaimed 15 acres of former saltmarsh that were filled with landfill refuse and created a 15-acre native coastal grassland, which combined will provide additional habitat for declining bird species, such as short-eared owls, bobolinks, American black ducks, and saltmarsh sharp-tailed sparrows. Senator Chafee was on-hand as EPA's New England Regional Administrator Robert W. Varney presented Mr. Sridhar with his commendation. During a site tour, Regional Administrator Varney was impressed with the level of hydrologic innovation and resulting reduction in potential future contamination, while Mr. Sridhar credited several refuge staff for their thoughtful ideas and ready assistance.
