Migration Stewardship: Beyond Borders at Aransas NWRC

Migration Stewardship: Beyond Borders was designed by Biological and Public Use staff of the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge as a two part educational outreach program for local students in the tri-county area. The event was designed to educate rural underserved students about the perils of animal migration and the importance of habitat preservation. Activities addressed Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills requirements for the State of Texas Public Education Guidelines.

Phase one held on November 18, 2004 at Fennessey Ranch in Bayside, Texas offered the following environmental education activities: Bird Adaptations for Migration, Monarch Butterfly Biology and Migration, Bird Watching and Identification, Monarch Butterfly Tagging and Insect Identification, General Wildlife Tour and various other environmental education hands-on learning experiences.

Phase two of the program was held on May 5, 2005. The event was scheduled as a celebration of International Migratory Bird Day 2005. Environmental Education was the focus with 22 presenters covering many topics about or related to migration. Students learned about the following: Whooping Cranes, Sea Turtles, Hawks, Migration Headaches, Fiddler Crabs, Habitat Restoration, Habitat Preservation, Migrating Waterfowl, Bats, Migrating Shorebirds, Historical Migrations of the Mammoth, Reptile and Amphibians, Refuge Tour ? Habitat Interaction, Insect Migration, The Threat of Power Lines and Tall Structures for Migratory Birds. Migration Stewards: Beyond Borders was a great success for all participants. A total of 768 students,104 teachers/parents, 28 volunteers, and 68 partners attended the two events.
