Senator Celebrates International Migratory Bird Day at Rhode Island Refuge
Northeast Region, May 7, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Braving a rainy, cold, and windy day, Rhode Island's Sen. Lincoln Chafee joined forty others in celebrating International Migratory Bird Day on May 7 at the Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge. In the highlight of the day, Sen. Chafee released a rehabilitated red-tailed hawk that had collided with a vehicle. The hawk flew from the senator's hand over a grassland and perched in a tree, to the delight and cheers of those present. The hawk had been rehabilitated by Vivian Maxson of the Born To Be Wild Nature Center. The release was a fitting event for this year's International Migratory Bird Day theme of helping birds avoid collisions with ground objects.

The day's events also included guided nature walks hosted by volunteer naturalists, educational displays, bird banding information, wildlife-oriented crafts for children, and the opportunity to earn a ?Junior Birder? patch.
