KENAI: Refuge Promotes Canoeing at Sports Show
Alaska Region, April 17, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge did not miss the boat at the Kenai Peninsula Sport, Recreation, and Trade show held April 15 - 17, 2005 at the Soldotna Sports Center. Over 300 people visited the Refuge booth which focused on canoeing opportunities within the Refuge. Refuge staff and volunteers met with the public and answered questions about the Refuge's two canoe systems. They also provided a fun and interactive game with prizes that required the identification of the different parts of a canoe. The Swanson River Canoe System links more than 40 lakes with the 46-mile long Swanson River within the Refuge; whereas the Swan Lake Canoe System accesses 30 lakes and the Moose River within its 60-mile route. The routes have earned recognition as National Recreational Trails and are enjoyed by thousands of Refuge visitors each year.
