2004 Ruffe Surveillance Report Completed and Available Online
Midwest Region, March 18, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The Service's Ashland, Wis., Alpena, Mich., and Lower Great Lakes fishery resource offices, along with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources summarized the 2004 monitoring activities for Eurasian ruffe in the 13th annual ruffe surveillance report. The ruffe (pronounced rough) is an invasive fish that was likely introduced into western Lake Superior by ship's ballast water during the mid 1980s. Ruffe compete with native fish for food and space, especially with yellow perch. A control program was established under federal legislation enacted in 1990. Annual ruffe surveillance activities have been ongoing since 1991, and detected the ruffe in Lake Huron in 1995, and in Lake Michigan in 2002. No ruffe have been detected in the Lower Great Lakes since surveillance began there in 1993. The 2004 document reported monitoring activity primarily outside of the documented ruffe range in the Great Lakes Basin. In Lake Superior, a total of five ruffe were collected within the periphery of their range, and one ruffe was newly discovered in Marquette harbor, Mich., extending their range 110 km eastward along the south shore. One ruffe was newly discovered in Big Bay de Noc, Lake Michigan, by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, extending their range 10 km eastward from Little Bay de Noc. No ruffe were captured from Lake Huron, the first time since they were discovered there in 1995. No ruffe were reported captured from inland lakes and streams in the Great Lakes Basin. The report, Surveillance For Ruffe In The Great Lakes, 2004, will be available on the Ashland FRO website at http://midwest.fws.gov/ashland.
