Journal Entry   Back Hudson Woods Unit Public Use Facilites Improved Southwest Region, February 28, 2005 Print Friendly Version Volunteers have donated nearly 2000 hours over the past four months to construct a boardwalk and observation deck for the Scoby Lake Trail, install benches around the trail and construct a deck and accessible walk way onto the Discovery Outpost. The trail upgrades were part of a Texas Trails Grant from Texas Parks and Wildlife to provide an all-access portion of the Scoby Lake Trail. Volunteers constructed the 780 ft. boardwalk from the parking area to Scoby Lake. An 8'x12' observation deck was added to the end of the boardwalk. A local Eagle Scout organized the construction of seven recycled plastic benches and concrete bases, by his Scout Troop. The benches were placed around the 2 mile Scoby Lake Trail. The Discovery Outpost, which overlooks Willow Oxbow, a restored wetland, was renovated by Volunteers who constructed a 28'x 14' deck, including an access ramp, onto the front of the cabin. The cabin is part of the Discovery Environmental Education Program for the Texas Mid-coast NWR Complex and is the primary location for studying the ecology of the bottomland forest. With these improvements in place, the San Bernard NWR will open Hudson Woods for public use seven days per week, sunrise to sunset. It had previously only been open on the weekends to the general public. Hudson Woods provides an opportunity to view wildlife and plants of the Columbia Bottomlands. Acquired in 2002, the eastern part of the unit is devoted to providing opportunities for environmental education, interpretation, photography and wildlife observation, in addition to providing bottomland habitat for migratory birds and resident wildlife.
